Janice Kinch

Janice Kinch, Liberal Candidate, Calgary West

A proud Calgarian by choice, I arrived in 2001 to assume a position at the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing. My roots are in Winnipeg where I attended school and trained as a nurse, later receiving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McMaster University.   I was a Staff Nurse in Winnipeg and Montreal, a Public Health Nurse in Ontario, and a Nurse Clinician in Gerontology in Toronto and Hamilton.  I also spent some time in Barbados, where my son and daughter were born.  Later, I was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Colorado prior to coming to Calgary.

I have become actively involved in the political aspects of our country at all levels. In particular, I am concerned about the direction of our health care system, lack of action on Aboriginal and seniors’ issues, and lack of support for families who choose to care for loved ones who wish to remain at home.

It is time to take up the challenge to run for Parliament to influence the changes that are needed to improve the lives of many Canadians.  I look forward to listening to and learning from the residents of Calgary West. I have been caring, honest, accountable, and passionate in my career as a registered nurse and as a nursing professor, qualities that I will carry with me as the representative of Calgary West.

Biography

For the past decade Janice has been an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary. This follows an extensive career in nursing which saw Janice working in Winnipeg, Ontario, and Montreal as a staff nurse, public health nurse and a Nurse Clinician in Gerontology. Janice was also a staff nurse for the Victorian Order of Nurses, and has served as the president of the Calgary Chapter of the Alberta Gerontological Nurses Association.

Janice has always held an interest in the politics that impact her community. She was a founding co-chair for Equal Voice Alberta South, an organization devoted to electing more women into politics. Janice has also been serving as a board member for Equal Voice Canada since 2005, on the advisory committee for the Calgary Sexual Health Center, and on the board for the Calgary West Federal Electoral District Association.

Politically, Janice is concerned with issues relating to women’s rights, healthcare, seniors, and First Nations people. Also of concern to Janice is the lack of support for families who choose to care for a loved one at home rather than in a hospital or long-term care facility. Based on her experiences both within her academic career, and her involvement within the community, Janice is eager to take up the challenge to run and serve as the Member of Parliament for Calgary West. She is committed to being part of the changes that are needed to improve not just the lives of Calgarians, but of all Canadians. Through an honest, accountable, and passionate work ethic as Member of Parliament for Calgary West, Janice plans to listen and connect with all constituents, and to bring their issues to Parliament. For Janice, it is all about providing effective representation for the constituents of Calgary West.

Born in Winnipeg, Janice describes herself as a passionate Canadian. She is grateful to have the privilege of living in a democratic country where there is so much opportunity to speak freely, vote her conscience, and to practice her profession (nursing) with integrity. Her children have grown up in a peaceful and prosperous country, and for that she is proud to call Canada home.

Janice is a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McMaster University, a Master of Science in Nursing (Community Health Nursing and Health Services Administration) from D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Colorado. In her spare time she participates as a chorus member for the Adult Recreational Choir Society of Calgary, and loves to travel. She has spent time hiking in Europe, living in Barbados, and has travelled across Canada by car, rail, and air.
